Originally developed during World War II, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene is a terpolymer usually composed of one-half styrene and one-half a combination of butadiene and acrylonitrile.

Variations in that ratio, along with blends with numerous other materials, have resulted in ABS plastic resins that provide a wide range of properties suitable for an array of applications.
